Conceiving Christian America/Deceiving Vulnerable Mothers
This distinguished panel brings together experts and victims from the fields of adoption and assisted reproduction to critically examine the dangers and harms of faith-based saviorism, focusing on the historical context, intersections, and the aftermath of these industries.
We are honored to welcome Rev. Dr. Janine Vance, author of Adoption History: An Adoptee’s Research into Child Trafficking, Risa Cromer, author of Conceiving Christian America: Embryo Adoption and Reproductive Politics, which explores how the U.S. Christian Right advances nationalist goals by strategically engaging with assisted reproduction through the practice of “embryo adoption” and Leslie Pate Mackinnon, LCSW, a therapist specializing in issues affecting families created through adoption and third-party reproduction. Leslie is a first mother who was forced to relinquish two sons in the mid-1960s and, decades later, gave birth to and raised IVF twins. She was also featured in Dan Rather’s investigative report Adoption or Abduction. Jenette Vance, co-founder of the Adoption Truth & Transparency Worldwide Network, will moderate the panel discussion.
