부모님이 동의하지 않는다면 누구를 존경하고 순종하겠습니까? 1980년대 초반의 겉보기에 목가적인 어린 시절은 작가의 아버지가 행글라이딩을 하다가 100피트에서 추락하고 외상성 뇌 손상에서 살아남아 Janine과 그녀의 쌍둥이 자매가 12세에 전임 간병인이 되면서 풀리기 시작합니다. Janine은 시작합니다. Who would you honor and obey if your parents disagree? The seemingly idyllic childhood in the early 1980s begins to unravel when the author’s father falls 100 feet while hang-gliding and survives a traumatic brain injury, causing Janine and her twin sister to become full-time caregivers at the age of 12. Janine begins to wonder, “Why did the accident happen,” and “Who am I,” on top of being asked, “What are you,” and other such questions by school kids. How does Janine’s father handle his identity change from an aerospace engineer and church leader only to be treated as a “disabled” person despite an intact intellect? Into adulthood, the author faces additional surprises that have to do with her mother’s unconventional appearance after death, the interpretation of dreams, and a discussion with the author’s intuition that starts her on a path outside of organized religion. These circumstances force Janine to question the childhood beliefs that have to do with unique yet universal relationships and may make you think twice about who you truly are underneath the layers of society’s preconceived notions.
